Surf in the Dominican Republic at Chino’s Surf School
For its location in the heart of the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic is an ideal destination for tourism. You will find beautiful beaches of transparent waters and white sands, lush mountainous landscape, and a rich cultural history.
Dominican Republic Surf Season
The surf breaks on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic (Puerto Plata, Sosua, Cabarete, and Rio San Juan) work best with Northeast swell beginning in September and continuing through March. As winter storms form off the Northeast coast of the United States, the swell moves southward toward the Caribbean, where we enjoy overhead-size waves all season. You can count on consistent waves and warm weather conditions for your winter surf trip getaway here in the Dominican Republic.
Cabarete winds are light offshore in the mornings and pick up the Easterly trade winds in the afternoon. Late afternoon and sunset surf sessions are also a frequent pleasure when the wind drops. From May to September, the conditions are perfect for surfers that enjoy fun mellow waves without crowds. This is a great time for long-boarding, children, and beginners at Encuentro beach. More advanced surfers will enjoy the other breaks around town for hollow barreling shore breaks.
We offer day surf trips to nearby towns for adventure travel and exploration, to see the countryside and experience the variety of beaches on the island. Contact us to learn more about planning your surf holiday in the Dominican Republic.
