Chino demonstrating how to surf at Chino Surf School in Encuentro Beach, Dominican Republic

Chino Fung is originally from Santo Domingo, the capital of Dominican Republic. His daily commute to school passed the ocean where he would sometimes see surfers but at that time the country didn’t have a very developed Surf Culture, boards were hard to come by, surf schools were non-existent, and the beaches in Santo Domingo were infamously polluted. Needless to say, where there’s a will there’s a way, Chino found a way to start surfing and the rest is history. He and many other surfers from the Capital all came to Cabarete because Playa Encuentro has the best and most consistent waves in the country. He eventually left the Capital for good and became a major part of what is now Playa Encuentro. In addition to his involvement with surf as a sport in D.R., he was also a major part of Jiu Jitsu and MMA development in the country. Chino is a brown belt in Jiu Jitsu, soon to be black belt, trains Crossfit daily, and of course, shreds waves.
